Why Rancher?

Rancher is a complete software stack for teams adopting containers. It addresses the operational and security challenges of managing multiple Kubernetes clusters across any infrastructure, while providing DevOps teams with integrated tools for running containerized workloads.

Unified multi-cluster app management

The First Real Answer For Multi-Cloud Computing

The people who depend on you demand that your services stay up, no matter what. The best way to ensure you meet demand is to deploy services in multiple regions, on multiple providers. You’ll need an efficient and reliable platform, built to manage multiple Kubernetes clusters in production.

Rancher not only deploys Kubernetes clusters anywhere, on any provider, but it also unites them under centralized authentication and access control. Because it’s agnostic about where the resources run, you can easily bring up clusters in a different provider and migrate resources between them. Instead of having several independent Kubernetes deployments, Rancher unifies them as a single, managed Kubernetes Cloud.

For power users and beginners

You will love the freedom to work on what you care about - without software or hardware getting in the way.

For those who have tried, writing Kubernetes manifests in YAML is unforgiving if you get it wrong. With Rancher, you benefit from Kubernetes immediately, without worrying about YAML. You can launch your applications and wire them together quickly at production level. You won’t need to know everything there is to know about Kubernetes before you can even begin.

100% Free and Open Source Software with Native Upstream Kubernetes

You need your software to be agile, reliable, and secure. A proprietary software vendor can stall or ignore your needed feature request. And with only a vendor’s technologists vetting code, how reliable and secure is it, really?

We are believers in the open-source paradigm. Every one of our products are free and open source. There’s no “community edition” that’s lesser than the “enterprise edition.” From the lone mad scientist to the global organization, all users get access to every advantage that comes with installing Rancher.

Realize the Full Potential of Kubernetes

A single solution for Kubernetes complexity, operations overwhelm, and vendor lock-in.

The challenges show on many fronts. Disparate monitoring and control points overwhelm operations teams. Kubernetes complexity slows everyone down. Vendor lock-in cripples freedom of choice and saddles teams with providers that no longer fit their needs.

Rancher solves these problems. Rancher ships out of the box with Prometheus and Grafana for detailed visibility into all data points. We make it dead simple for new Kubernetes users to deploy workloads while making possible behind the scenes for advanced users to interact with Kubernetes objects directly. And our simple management structure leads to securer systems, more productive teams, and freedom to pivot wherever the market may turn.

01 Prepare a Linux Host

Prepare a Linux host with 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04 (or another supported Linux distribution), and at least 4GB of memory. Install a supported version of Docker on the host.

02 Start the server

To install and run Rancher, execute the following Docker command on your host:

$ sudo docker run -d --restart=unless-stopped -p 80:80 -p 443:443 rancher/rancher

To access the Rancher server UI, open a browser and go to the hostname or address where the container was installed. You will be guided through setting up your first cluster.
